Overview: 

Thinking of expanding your clinical practice and getting into medical-legal work in CSA? 

In this first webinar we will explore how a safe and loving childhood protects our mental health and confers advantages in adulthood. 

We will describe the consequences of CSA and how it impacts on our identity and beliefs about ourselves, our ability to regulate our emotions, our ability to form and maintain relationships and our expectations of others and how we will be treated.

We will explain the connection between CSA and formal mental health diagnoses and explain some of the common mental health problems that arise as a consequence of CSA.  We will also explore some of the factors that mitigate the impact of CSA.

There will be opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification about mental health jargon that may frequently appear on psychological assessments.

Dr. Naomi Murphy

 

Dr Naomi Murphy is a Consultant Clinical & Forensic Psychologist with three decades of experience supporting individuals and organizations to understand, heal and flourish after trauma inflicted upon them, within them or by them. She spent two decades developing and running an NHS treatment programme for men with a diagnosis of personality disorder in a high secure English jail who had previously been considered to be “untreatable psychopaths”.  Many of these men had experienced abuse whilst being “Looked After” children.   Naomi attended workshops for the Independent Inquiry into Childhood Sexual Abuse led by Professor Jay to help the panel understand the needs of those in contact with the criminal justice system.Alongside her NHS work Naomi has acted as an Expert Witness in many Child and Family legal proceedings as well as providing assessments and testimony in criminal and public injury legal proceedings, Mental Health Review Tribunals and Parole panel hearings. In her private practice, she has specialized in working with survivors of childhood abuse and neglect who often present with complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

Naomi is trained in many psychotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of trauma and neglect. She is an accredited sensorimotor psychotherapist and a registered clinical and forensic psychologist with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).  Dr Murphy has particular expertise in working with betrayal trauma, including the experiences of whistleblowers and those recovering from the long-term psychological impact of boarding school. She is also a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Restorative Justice in the UK. In addition to her clinical and consultancy work, Dr Murphy co-hosts the ‘Locked Up Living’ podcast.  Find out more about her work here.

Andy Woodward

 Andy Woodward is a former English professional soccer player who disclosed in 2016 that he had been a victim of repeated sexual abuse by his former coach Barry Bennell (later convicted) whilst a trainee in the 1980s.  His disclosure of abuse led to many other men coming forward to share their experiences of sexual abuse in childhood within British footballing academies.  His book Position of Trust was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year and his story was dramatized as the film Floodlights. 

In addition to his own fight for justice and work supporting others who have survived CSA (both in the UK and internationally), Andy has served as a police officer investigating CSA. He is a powerful public speaker. You can find out more about Andy here.

Shane Henry, B.P.H.E., M.Sc., LL.B.

Shane brings a calm and courteous approach to personal injury litigation. He has an inner drive that pushes him to fight to ensure that his clients reach their best result, either through settlement or trial. Shane has practiced exclusively in the area of Plaintiffs’ Personal Injury Law since his call to the bar. He has successfully represented his clients’ interests before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, the Ontario Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, and in Canada Pension Plan appeals.

Shane’s diverse background helps him to understand that every client has their own needs. He has previously worked in the area of dispute resolution with amateur and professional athletes. His undergraduate work in the area of Physical and Health Education allows him to recognize the importance of helping clients to achieve the best possible recovery in both their lives and their lawsuits. Shane’s ability to develop personal and professional relationships helps him to meet his clients’ needs in a timely and courteous manner.
